I’m not kidding about the jealousy thing. My sister started her own business because she got tired of coming home for lunch and seeing me working in my jammies.  And it made her crazy that I was always taking Fridays off. Or leaving for the afternoon to go to the park with our puppy.

But I digress. We were talking about YOU being outrageously happy and singing and dancing after starting your own Mobile or Virtual Assisting business.

Really, I mean, who wouldn’t be happy in a job where you have almost unlimited freedom, flexibility, and variety?  That’s the warm fuzzy part of being your own boss – setting your own hours, deciding what type of clients you want to work with, and choosing which projects best fit what you love to spend time doing.

Ok, so let’s think about that for a second.

What types of stuff do you love to do, anyway?  Make a list!  Is it organizing stuff? (There are LOTS of consultants out there who desperately need to be kept organized.)  Maybe you really like research. Or creating presentations. Or managing calendars, travel, and scheduling.  Special events? Data entry? It really doesn’t matter.  As long as you keep your “favorites” list in mind, you’ll find clients who need your skills!

Ok, but let’s stop for a minute. I want you to think about what you’re doing for work right now.

  • Are you employed full-time as an administrative assistant, fetching coffee, returning calls, and fixing the copy machine?  Or are you working for a temp agency, getting some work here and there, a good job, and then a bad one. Then, one you love! But, darn, they aren’t hiring.
  • Maybe you’re a full-time mom. (This, by the way, is the hardest work of all.)  Maybe the kids are old enough for school and you want to do something more than creative than watching Dora the Explorer while making peanut butter crackers decorated with raisin smiles every day.
  • Or how about this?  You were working for a nice, big company. Life seemed great, the job was satisfying, and your company seemed stable. Until that one Friday where they announced the dreaded “M” word.  Merger.  Quickly following the “M” word was the “D” word. Downsizing.  Uh-oh.  Not feeling so secure anymore, are you?

The Truth

No job is perfect. And becoming a Mobile or Virtual Assistant won't guarantee you security. And it probably won’t make you rich, either.  But, there are plenty of women across the U.S. and around the globe making a very comfortable living in this career.  Some work full-time. Others choose to work part-time.  They are single, married, divorced, have kids, don’t have kids, are in their 20's, 30’s, 40’s, 50’s and beyond.

But don't just trust me.  I invite you to do your research.  There are easily a dozen VA Associations, and probably that many more discussion groups and boards out there.  One of the associations does a yearly survey and I’d be happy to share a copy of it with you or point you in the right direction to get it yourself.

And while money IS important (and is the reason we work, right?) choosing to become a Mobile or Virtual Assistant is about more than just dollars and cents.

It’s about individuality within a supportive community.

It’s about taking control of your time and learning to define your days any way you choose to.

It’s about making time for your family.  Or supporting yourself. Or bringing in some extra money because you have the creativity, brains, and skill to do it.

But it’s also about making friends and contacts with other MAs and VAs across the country. It’s about building relationships with great clients who appreciate you and your work.  And most of all, it's about choosing to do work you both love and are good at.

And here’s one more thing I love about this profession: you have the best of both worlds!

Become a Mobile Assistant and you get in-person client interaction balanced with hours working from home. Or do you just really want to work from home? Choose to be a VA and skip the commute, the wardrobe and the handshaking.  It really IS up to you.  You get to decide!

Ah…and I forgot the three MOST important parts of being your own boss:

  1. Setting your own rates
  2. Choosing the hours you work
  3. And my personal favorite - deciding how much vacation to take each year (the correct answer is: LOTS)

Whatever your reason for choosing this profession, know that you’re doing it on YOUR terms.

How Can I Help You?

When I first started working as a Mobile Administrative Assistant in 2003, I didn’t know any other people doing this kind of work.  I learned through trial and error, by getting advice from friends, family and clients, and by using the business resources in my community.

Want to skip the trial and error phase?

That’s where Define Your Day comes in!  Both the study from home program and the 10-week course I teach in person here in the Charlotte area give you all the information you need to get your Mobile or Virtual Assisting business started.  We cover everything from choosing a name to networking. I’ve chosen experts to cover the tricky topics (LLC, Sole Proprietorship or S-Corp?) and have a Life Coach coming in to discuss work/life balance.  Want to know your strengths and weaknesses? That’s the where my partner Denise Altman, with the Altman Initiative Group, Inc., comes in.  She’ll administer a personality assessment called the DISC ™ which will be hugely helpful in giving you feedback and focus.

Whoops, I’m getting ahead of myself again.

First, I want to encourage you to check out the rest of my website.

It’s chock full of freebies, too, because I want you to be able to make an informed decision.  My Article Archives page contains almost a year’s worth of information from my free bi-weekly e-zine, Supporting Solopreneurs.  You can listen to an audio recording of a tele-class I hosted with one of the premier virtual assisting communities in the country.  And you can check out my book recommendations to help you do the “inside” work (related to how you feel about yourself, your communication style and your relationship with money).

And seriously, if you want to e-mail me or call me with a question, do it. I’d love to hear from you.

Wait! Before we finish, can I tell you a little secret?

I don’t want to be boastful, but here it is: my favorite moment happens when I meet new people and they inevitably ask me, “What do you do for a living?”

I smile and say, “I’m self-employed.” And then I watch the respect and admiration slowly change their expression.  When I go on to tell them I work as a Mobile Administrative Assistant, I can almost literally see their ears perk up.

More times than not, they say, “Gosh, I could use someone like you.” OR “Gosh, I know someone who could use your services.”  It happens all the time.

So, right now go back up to the top of the page and fill in your primary e-mail address.  Click the blue “Register Now” button to sign up.
